Laochra Gael – ‘Anthony Tohill’

LAOCHRA GAEL

on TG4 21st February @ 8:00pm

Anthony Tohill played with Derry from 1990 to 2002 and in that era the towering midfielder won an All Ireland, four National Leagues, four Allstars and two Ulster titles. He was widely recognised as one of the very best midfielders of his time, with great accuracy, strength and a huge engine.

In this programme, he thinks back to 1989 when he won both a Hogan Cup with St Pat’s Maghera, and an All Ireland Minor title with Derry. 1993 was obviously the highlight, when Derry won the All Ireland title and he laughs recalling the late simple free which he nearly missed. His outrage can still be sensed at the Derry County Board’s decision to jettison manager Eamonn Coleman after the 1994 loss to Down. Although Derry reached two All Ireland semi finals afterwards, one can hear from Anthony and his comrade, Tony Scullion, that they didn’t fully realise their potential.

Of course he had a long and successful period with the Ireland team in the International series against Australia, as a player, as a captain and as a manager, and he has great memories of wins during those times. Anthony and Tony are joined in the programme by Peter Canavan and Jarlath Burns.
