Laochra Gael – Ken McGrath

Ken McGrathThe second programme of ten features Waterford’s own Ken McGrath.

Ken McGrath was at the heart of the Waterford team that lit up the world of hurling during the late 1990’s and 2000’s. Skilful, stylish and teak tough the Mount Sion clubman was adept at playing at centre back, midfield or centre forward for the Déise, winning 3 all stars in the process. Honest and frank, he recalls the crushing All Ireland Final defeat of 2008 at the hands of Kilkenny, the titanic 2004 Munster Final clash with Cork which is regarded by many as the greatest hurling match of all time as well as the wonderful support he received following heart surgery in 2014. TG4 Top 5 GAA Documentaries

Na MeehansWe were delighted to read the recent article for Balls.ie by Sinéad Farrell, which cited the 5 top TG4  GAA documentaries.  Of the five documentaries selected each was part of the renowned Laochra Gael series, now in its 14th season and is produced here at Nemeton TV for TG4.

The favourites from the Balls.ie list included Armagh’s Oísín McConville; Dan Shanahan from the Déise, Galway’s , Ja Fallon, DJ Carey from Kilkenny and from the Kingdom, Mike Sheehy.  The article pointed out the way in which each Laochra Gael programme captures some of the defining moments throughout GAA history, exploring personal recollections and reflections by both past and present players and keen observers of the sport.

Reliving these moments has given the audience the opportunity to see into the hearts and minds of these obviously gifted, dedicated and inspiring people and is perhaps one of the many reasons for the series being so successful.

Since the series began back in 2001 there have been over 130 programmes produced, with over 600 interviews on approximately 2,000 hours of film and fans will not have long to wait as the next series is due to return to screens on TG4 in the Spring of 2016. Series 14 will see another 10 programmes featuring some of the finest players  we have ever seen in the  GAA, ranging from the 1960’s to virtually the present day including JJ Delaney, Ken McGrath and Declan O’Sullivan to find out who else will be making an appearance follow us on twitter @Laochra_Gael

Celtic Media Festival in Dungarvan

Screen Shot 2015-11-25 at 10.04.16 a.m.Next year’s Celtic Media Festival takes place in Dungarvan in County Waterford, Ireland, and, with the addition of three brand-new award categories in Comedy, Radio Comedy and Radio Magazine Show, a total of 24 Torc Awards will be presented at the 2016 Festival. Over the years the Festival has celebrated the very best in Celtic media, with BBC/Hartswood Films’ Sherlock, BBC/RTÉ/Artists Studio Ltd’s The Fall and BBC Cymru Wales’ Doctor Who just a few of the major productions to be nominated for Torc Awards for Excellence. Past winners include RTÉ One’s Love/Hate, Fiction Factory’s Y Gwyll/Hinterland and TG4/Magamedia’s Corp + Anam.

Catriona Logan, Festival Director said: “We’re delighted that the number of entries submitted for the 2016 Torc Awards for Excellence are so high. It showcases the increasing breadth and depth of the Celtic media industry when our Call for Entry figures increase year on year. Our national and international juries have a wealth of productions to choose from when they pick winners for each category, and we can’t wait to see everyone in Dungarvan in April to celebrate the talent on offer at the Festival.”

The 37th Celtic Media Festival takes place over 20th – 22nd April 2016 and will see hundreds of delegates enjoy a packed festival programme. Supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Waterford City and County Council, TG4, BBC Scotland, RTÉ, MG ALBA, S4C, Northern Ireland Screen, BBC Northern Ireland and BBC Cymru Wales, the festival consistently attracts international delegates wherever it is held and offers a programme that celebrates the influential media industry of the Celtic nations and regions, as well as providing networking opportunities for delegates and speakers alike.

Irial Mac Murchú, chief executive of studio satellite services and production company Nemeton TV, who was involved locally behind the selection of Dungarvan, said the people of the town are already gearing up for the festival which looks set to bring a “massive boost” to the town.

“What makes Dungarvan an interesting choice is that instead of in other cities where the festival has been concentrated around one venue, Dungarvan is so compact that the town itself almost becomes the venue rather than just one place.

“I expect the festival is going to have a pretty big impact over those few days on Dungarvan and not only that but it comes the Wednesday after the annual food festival in the town so it will be a really, really big week in Waterford.”

Full information on the Call for Entries and award categories is available at www.celticmediafestival.co.uk

The Celtic Media Festival 2016 will take place in Dungarvan in County Waterford, Ireland, from 20th – 22nd April 2016.

Logainm – New 26 part series

LogainLogainm Still 03m is a brand new studio-based 26 part series exploring the place-names of Ireland. Ireland’s history is written in its place names, they are a unique aspect of our shared culture and heritage. There are millions of examples all over the island, from the field behind your house, to the four provinces of Ireland, and each of them has their own story to tell, each of them with their own distinctive sense of place.

Have you ever wondered where different place names come from, places like Horse and Jockey, Stoneybatter  Limavady or Co. Meath’s Nobber?  Have you ever passed a signpost on the road, only to look at the name of the town, and think, how can that name in English translate to that Irish, places like Wexford/Loch Garman or Dublin/Baile Átha Claith..you might be surprised by their origins!

Each week, a local guide will bring us on a journey, to visit the place names that inspire and intrigue them.  They explore Ireland’s mountains, lakes and rivers, explain the origins of the place names that surround them.  Some place names go back to the pre-Christian times, while others developed with the arrival of the Vikings and the Anglo- Normans. Other place names are born from legends and mythology, or from the physicality of the landscape around them.

catch it on tg4 every tuesday at 8pm. @logainmTg4

Satelitte Uplinks Flying High

IMG_0006Digisat just finished one of their busiest weekends ever!  With 5 Live GAA matches in 1 day and a huge musical first with the staging of a live music event from the infamous Crumlin Jail in Belfast as part BBC’s music day.

With the addition of new MPU van late last year to the fleet, the year was off to a flying start and there seems to be no slowing down.   The Digisat team have already clocked up more than 30’000 miles in the first 5 months, providing uplinks for live political, musical and sporting events throughout Ireland and Britain and will continue to travel many more thousand miles before the year ends.

Highlights of the year so far have included the British general elections, the Northwest 200 (the largest sporting event in Ireland) and the recent Royal visit by Prince Charles.   As well as the ongoing live sport coverage for TG4, Digisat also work with Sky Sports, the BBC, and RTÉ.

The future certainly seems to be bright in the area of live event broadcast.   “Keeping up to speed with the latest technology and the introduction of new players moving into the market are some of the constant business challenges we face.  However, as with most businesses our strength is in our people, we employ some of the best in the industry and with their expertise and flexibility we are able to provide a service second to none” commented Tomás MacCraith, Head of Technical Facilities.

Class of 2015 Premiere

NEM-027Over 150 people attended the Waterford Institute of Technology and Nemeton TV Higher Diploma in Film graduate premiere on Thursday 21st May held in SGC Cinema, Dungarvan.

The Higher Diploma course in TV is taught between WIT and Nemeton TV in An Rinn, ”It is an important and well established link between the Institute, the Gaeltacht and industry”. Irial Mac Murchú said at the launch and pointed out that many of the graduates of the course are now working in all aspects of not only the TV industry but also in making digital videos for marketing. Nemeton itself currently employes nine graduates from the course.

The students on the Waterford Institute of Technology Post Graduate course in Television have been working very hard under the guidance of their camera, editing and directing tutors over the past few months to research, film and edit they include a variety of excellent half hour of dramas, music shows and documentaries. Many of which were filmed in Waterford and Dungarvan, others were shot in Derry, Galway, Cork, Aran Islands, and An Rinn.

The films showcased on the 21st May include a cookery programme on healthy food presented by Waterford film maker Grace O Sullivan and edited by Knockanore native Maeve Neville. Locations in the programme include the Tannery, Dungarvan, Barrons Bakery and Flahavan’s. Other films include a documentary on Inis Meáin by Clare native Ceri Garfield, an Ob Doc on Clonmel Woman’s Rugby Team presented by Jennifer Ní hOgáin. Aoife Ní Rian’s documentary features rare footage taken by her Grandfather, Sean Quinn from Waterford while working for the UN in the Middle East in the 1950’s.

The films are written, filmed and edited by the students themselves. In the past few years, emphasis on drama has led to at least two dramas being written, shot and edited on the course. Drama tutors on the course

include the Ros na Rún script editor as TG4 is well known for their dramas. This media course is a chance for new voices in drama to make a film for example;

Liadán Ní hUallacháin adapted a short story by Michéal O Conghaile for her film. While writer Gillian Grattan’s film is about the play she wrote and staged in Waterford ‘Hooked’. Kevin Pim’s has made a series on lesser known tourism sights in Co. Waterford and includes a story about an inventive Waterford woman who made hot water bottles out of parts of a World War 2 submarine! as well as a feature on the Walls of Waterford and the Viking Triangle.

The Higher Diploma is a very practical course teaching camera, editing and production, storytelling and scripting skills taught by TV professional directors, producers and WIT lecturers. As course director Bláithín says; “It is a highly regarded course in the media industry and equips students to work in both the Irish language and English language media industry as well as digital marketing. We have a very good record of graduate employment as we incorporate work experience into the course.”

One of the films, shown in last year’s graduate show went on to win first prize in the National Student Media Awards for best documentary in the Irish language and an extended one hour film was commissioned and broadcast by TG4 of the same programme. Two other films were also selected for broadcast on TG4. Students from this year’s course hope to surpass the success of previous year’s graduates with their films.

The Higher Diploma is a very practical course on camera, editing and production scripting skills taught by Irish television industry professionals, and Waterford Institute of Technology. Eight graduates of previous years of the Higher Diploma in Television are working in Nemeton TV. Others have found employment in production companies, TG4, Film and Digital Marketing companies.
